I guess I didn't like this story because I think the plot of this story is weak and boring, characters are absolutely ordinary and that author has a lot of stories with more interesting plot than that story. For example i like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

Roald Dahl is a famous short story writer whose outstanding stories have been filming since 1952. In 2008 he became the 16th greatest British writer since 1945 according to "The Times". His wonderful story "The Sound Machine” was the first screening but it was as popular with audience as his most well-known book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. "More Tales of the Unexpected” is a collection of short stories where “The Umbrella Man” was published in 1980 by Penguin. I think like many others publication projects of famous writers in the end of their careers “More Tales of the Unexpected” collection had a purpose selling everything that would have never been sold out again. “The Umbrella Man” is typical for novelists, it is a simple and unpredictable story without deep and intellectual insight for readers but with enormous interpretation ability.

Overall – dislike.

I like this story. The author`s style is interesting and understandable. The plot of the story is very unusual. I`ve never read about such situation before. The story itself makes me think about our life, may be because of the wimple of this old man, may be because of this lady. I don`t understand why people do such things. Why did this old man trick this lady? The glass of whiskey isn`t an excuse. I can understand him if he needs money for medicine or something else, frankly speaking, when I`ve read that he was in a hurry, I thought that something has happened. I don`t know why, but I am sure, that after this situation the lady will not trust the people at all, because as far as I understand she has been very suspicious before, but after this event , for sure, she will be suspicious tenfold. To my mind the moral of this story is obvious, we should be more careful with unknown people, even if they are well dressed and plausible.

In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It is written in a striking manner and the author’s style is captivating and thrilling.
Truly speaking, I could hardly guess what denouement of the story would be, even in spite of the fact that the plot seemed to be simple. It proves the fact that Roald Dahl has devised an intricate storyline.
The characters of the story (being absolutely ordinary at first blush) possess distinctive features. The girl is a teenager, but reasons rather maturely, for example, thinking over her mother’s deeds. Her mother is extremely suspicious, but vice-versa is too curious as a child. And the old man is sharp-witted and resourceful, but his wit is directed off the point.
Besides, it is interesting that the author is not involved in the story. He doesn’t evaluate his characters and their actions, leaving the reader to decide whether they are right or not.
I suppose that the author has invented this unusual story to show readers that we should judge not by appearances or by words, but by deeds.

I completely enjoyed the story "The Umbrella Man" by Roald Dahl: it's easy to read and understand because of the author's style. Speaking about the plot, I would say that it is rather unexpected: it holds you up to the end of the story. Speaking about the characters, the author have chosen and given them different ages. Here is the girl, who likes the old man and the way he behaves, and her mother, who thinks that "the nicer the man seems to be, the more suspicious you must become". Then, this Old Man. So,what about him? I must say that he is the master of his deal: it looks funny, but he is described in his best way. I would say that I liked him as a character in this story. I think, dear reader, that you'll thoroughly enjoy the story and have a fun.

I entirely enjoyed Roald Dahl’s story. The plot contains all the necessary parts: the exposition – to introduce the characters, the rising action – to introduce the conflict and to intrigue the readers, the climax – to excite the feelings of the reading public, the falling action – to extend the tension and the conclusion – to accomplish the story. Speaking about style of the narrative, it is witty and highly unique. At the same time the author utilizes rather simple, understandable and intelligible language. He describes the characters indirectly, through the words and thoughts of the protagonists, thus leaving the readers to evaluate them independently. In my judgment, the narrative includes not the only one idea. However, the moral can be formulated as following: many a fine dish has nothing on it. All written above makes this story amazing and astonishing. You can read it and judge its worth for yourself.

Frankly speaking, I went into raptures because of the plot of the story and its witty manner of narration. The story has rather unforeseen denoument, as this poor man expected to be typical robber, but he turned to be rather sophisticated expert of human souls in case when he exchange his umbrella on money, and in case what he gets in return one glass of whiskey shows he is just a victim of his passion for alcohol. The whole story is written in the form of dialogue, deeds and characters of heroes are expressed indirectly and it makes this short story alive and absorbing. To my mind, it is written in a manner of detective story and the reader watch the development of events with great interest. I really enjoyed Roald Dahl’s story and advise everybody to read it.

I’ve faced with Roald Dahl for the first time and I should say that the author possesses a brilliant talent in keeping reader in tension and developing his or her imagination.
This story is rather extraordinary. I can’t say that the story itself was very interesting for me but the author keeps me in tension all the time. I’ve assumed many variations of events while reading but every time I’ve mistaken. Also, Roald Dahl uses very simple language. So, both simple language and simple plot allowed me to develop my own picture of vents according to my imagination, mood etc..
That’s why I think that if you are tired from long stories with deep philosophy, complicated plot, dozens of characters and want to relax, this story will help you to reach this goal.

I don’t like this story. Yes, it’s written in understandable manner, but the plot is too boring, weak and predictable. The author conveys us about how tricksters and swindlers devise cunning ways and schemes to play upon the sentiments of cunning people. They put innocent faces to make others that they are their well wishers and have good intentions to help them. The title given to the story is very appropriate and suggestive. As far as I understand, the theme of this story is: how people get cheated by clever knaves. The message is the purpose, the aim of the author in telling a particular story. The purpose may be simply one of entertainment, but often there are more serious messages. May be I’m wrong, read this story and draw your own conclusion.

I was caught by reading this short story. The unpredictable ending, which shows the tricky game of the old “gentleman” makes this story rather unusual and fascinating, though the beginning of the story seems to be ordinary and without surprise. The author has chosen a 12-year-old girl as a narrator and the whole situation is viewed through her unfeigned, not quite childish way of thinking (e.g. when the girl said about her mother’s frosty-nosed stare). This magnificent manner of narration and magnificent understandable language turns the reading of this story into an absorbing pleasant process.
“The Umbrella Man” is easy to comprehend due to its not complicated plot and way of narration. Besides, this story does not have any deeply philosophical or intellectual background, it is true to life, and, I think, familiar to a lot of people.
This story is just a good example that sometimes it is rather difficult to distinguish an honest person from a cheater, even if s/he behaves respectfully and politely and we should be just more cautious with strangers.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story as the storyline is absolutely fascinating and astonishing. I was blown away by the perfection of Roald Dahl's writing style. His word choice is flawless and the description of even the trivial things are brilliant and vivid. The ending is predictable, but getting into the plot is an engaging journey with the well-developed, central characters and with interesting questions to think about. The author wants us to show us the stark realities of life. "The nicer the man seems to be, the more suspicious you must become". The girl's mother was absolutely right to suspect the old man, as there are, in fact, a few people we can really believe in. And this incident just proves that. No matter how well-bread, well-spoken or well-dressed people are, they can betray us or even play a trick on us. So we should pay more attention to strange people and try not to be too trusting. This story is defintely worth reading and rereading. I highly recommend it to everyone and I am sure that it will grip you at once.

This story is worth reading. The plot is extraordinary and weird. This story is seen through the eyes of a little girl whose mother always preaches her not to talk to strangers in the streets. However she made a mistake and felt sorry about her deed. It’s hard to say whether she was right or not. Sometimes people need a helpful hand but we ignore them and it becomes a tragedy. You never know when you’ll need some help, so do the good deeds and someone will help you instead. This lady was cheated but have you thought about old man how grateful he was. To my mind happiness is difficult thing. In conclusion I’d like to add that nobody was hurt that’s why this story has a happy end and everyone got what he or she deserves . I recommend to read the Umbrella Man by Roald Dahl for children as well as for adults

"The Umbrella Man" I liked the story because it shows the pretty vital topic. In this story, stating that the girl and her mother bli omanuty elderly man. But can we call it a sin? I think not. I think, short story writer wanted to convey to our mind that older people are very lonely and even they need to communicate. In this story, I liked the twelve year old girl, who was trying to tell her mother that she is bad comes to an elderly man.
I also liked the old man, who was probably very lonely. Something else appeals to me in the form of men, and most likely it was his polite speech.
Most of all I did not like the girl's mother. She was a little too strict, too violent, and behaved with a man as cunning serpent, which only needed an umbrella. The image of the girl's mother pushes and causes negative emotions, so I do it and did not like.

I read the story by umbrella man. I don’t like it but it got me thinking. In the story of the 3 main characters. This old man, mother and daughter. Of the main characters I want to highlight an elderly man. He did everything that he wanted. From old age and boredom, he entertained himself as wanted. And didn’t like the girl’s mother. She didn’t even think what the old man had. Mother with daughter happened to all that was said and done man. I think that the author wanted to show us how lonely are the elderly. And as people do not pay attention to what is happening with their parent.
I want to make a small conclusion throughout the story. Reading this story I started to think about such things as human lite. In the world there is a lot of things, but we can’t even pay attention to our loved ones. We are busy working, studying and not enough time even to once again call their grandmother and grandfather and ask how they feel. I want to say that we have never forgotten about them. They helped us become what we are now. And they gave us what no one else in the world will not be able to give. No wonder they say that a child without parents without wings. Cherish your family and never don’t forget about them.

The narrator of this story - 12-years-old girl who when to London with my mother to the dentist. The girl sealed the tooth, and they went into the café. When it came time to go home they discover that there is torrential rain, and they have no umbrella. An elderly gentleman with umbrella offers them a deal – he forgot his wallet at home and would like to sell them with the umbrella instead of paying for a taxi to his house. The transaction took place, both parties are satisfied. But the old man is not as simple as it seems, and then begin an amazing event.
The main characters of the novel are a little girl and her mother and old man.
I really liked the story, especially the end of the composition. No one could even assume that everything will end. I could not even think that an elderly person will behave. Some would say that this man just lonely and that is their way of looking for the fun, but in my opinion it’s a bit cruel and not funny. It is possible to place mom and I would do taking least I was approached by an old man and asked for money, I certainly would not have refused him.
I very much liked the girl, who not looking at suspicions of mother, wished to give at once money to the old man. And even in the end of history when they have found out the truth about it, she did not begin to speak somehow badly about the man.
In my opinion, the author of the story we wanted to show that there is lonely elderly people who are looking for the fun, not to sit at home alone. Pay more attention the older people!

I liked the story The Umbrella Man by Roald Dahl . I find it instructive. If you trust the person you trust to the end, so it will be easier for you and him. From this story we can take, and that the first and subsequent review by a stranger is better nothing has been said about this man and his intent.
I liked the character of the old man. Though he is negative. He lied to the people, in particular the girl and her mother, but did it in such a way that those who were caught on his fishing rod, thought we did a very good deed - helped the man and another cranked up a bargain - got an umbrella, which at that time was absolutely not superfluous. The story says more about the destructive power of desire. Old man liked to drink whiskey, and to pay for the drink, he stole umbrellas and sold to strangers, had fallen under the downpour that day. This is very tricky. This old man so all carefully thought out. A pity of course those people who, after a pint of beer did not find their umbrellas. Although, maybe it's a punishment for them, so no need to linger over a glass.
Character girl's mother is also interesting. Many of us with age take many stereotypes about what is good to do and what should be abandoned. She thought long and hard over what to believe whether a stranger or better to continue to catch a taxi. In the end, the primitive desire to possess expensive silk umbrella for peanuts wins in it. She is in fact just wants an umbrella, and not to help the old, the infirm old man. Even buying an umbrella for 20 pounds, she does not want to stay made a fool. Because of this, she and her daughter decided to follow the old man. And does it matter what a stranger to spend the money? Here the author wants to show us that the good things we do not have to wait for rewards, example a silk umbrella. If you help someone, you just be happy that you need at the moment this man.

This story very pleased me. I think that author wanted to say to the readers, that a person can appear quite another, what seems at first blush. Basic heroes of this story are a girl, her mother and old man. Each of these personages interesting. A girl is a naive personage, estimating people at first blush. A girl`s mother is a woman that estimates people on the unchanging principles and rules. And old man is a sly and clever personage that can find going near everybody. The old man became my favourite personage. An author behaves this hero with sincere love and with a humour. This old man pleased to me the manners and ability to intermingle with people. He has a gift of persuasion. I think that it is a very contrasting and temperamental personage. Every reader see different sense in his actions. Someone considers that he cheats for the sake of fun. Someone considers that he need for some money. An author considers that his action is a game. Reading a story I understood that it is needed to violate the rules and not judge a person at first blush. We are very often mistaken in people.

The history was interesting, but end of the text didn't make on me impression. I wanted more emotional end of history from the main heroes of this history. I liked the old man. It is intelegently. Well - the person. The girl's mother wasn't pleasant. It was very suspicious and cold. I think, the author wanted to tell that it is necessary to help old men and to pay to them more attention.

Story "The Umbrella man" I liked it. End of story for me unexpected. The story is quite good.I enjoyed reading the story. This story showed us how amusing old man.The story is very interesting. Story makes you wonder why did that old man.
The umbrella man is an excellent short story by Roald Dahl, a very clever writer with wonderful ideas, who published Roald Dahl's The Umbrella Man .
The Umbrella Man : A mother and daughter meet a gentlemanly old man on a street corner, who offers them a beautiful silk umbrella in exchange for a pound note. They trade, and the daughter notices that the "feeble" old man suddenly seems much sprier. They follow, and discover that the gentleman is really a clever con artist, who visits various pubs, has a drink, and then steals another umbrella to continue the cycle!
The story revolves around irony and deception. The central irony concerns the way in which the old man insists that they take the umbrella for the money that they give him, and the way in which the girl is concerned that they are taking advantage of the old man.
The irony of the story is that of course they are not taking advantage of the old man--in fact, he is taking advantage of them to get more money for another drink. The irony is heightened by the mother's lecture to the daughter on being able to judge people correctly as the old man walks away, a lot faster and sprayer than before. The mother is so pleased to have "judged" the old man, she thinks, whereas she has been taken in like so many others before. He is an elaborate con man who has successfully fooled them and manages to fund his drinking by stealing umbrellas and then selling them to unsuspecting individuals.

On the English lesson we read the tale, which name was “The Umbrella Man” by Roald Dahl. This story is such interesting and funny. The main characters of this tale are girl, her mother and a man. This story about people, who were in London. Girl and her mother went to dentist. Then started rain. Adventure for family began. When girl and her mother stood on the pavement in the rain and looking for taxy to them came up the man. He was polite, well-spoken and well-dressed, he was real gentleman. Girl liked the man, but her mother considered him suspicious. Then the man said that he needed to money for taxi and get at home. Man proposed to girl’s mother to buy his umbrella, it was a lovely umbrella. After long requests the woman gave to him little money. But girl’s mother still wasn’t trust him. So, the way it turned out. Rather than to go home, he went to pub. He spent money for a drink the whiskey. But the most interesting was in the fact that when he went out of the pub, handing umbrella, and off he went. For all these observed the girl and her mother. They understood that it was his little game. I like this story, and I like the main characters, but especially I like the man, because he was funny, cunning and smart. I think author want to tell for us that we must be careful and to know one rule. It is “Trust, but verify!”

I read intresting story called "The umbrella man by Roald Dahl"recently in English. This story very impressed me. It was a lot of sense. Thesstory is about trustin people. It is built on trust any humanrelationship. Protagonists of story, motherand daughter, were not gulliblepeople. But they wanted to help elderly man. Old msn was not so simple. Those umbrellas for witch he requested the money was stolen. Riading and analyzing the story, we undestand that old man storythem fun. Story suggests the idea that we should not help everyone. And ofter reading the story you can conseive beacouse of what men do. From loneliness? Or due the poor? In any case you always have to pay aftention to the elderly. Offen in difficult times is always yor help. Remain not indiferent to their problems remain. And most importantly, take care of their grandparents. Do not torget to call them. And of ter tell them that you love them.

I read a story about a man with an umbrella. I liked the story about the old man, mom and girl.
I really liked the old man. He was funny and intelligent, a real gentleman. his knack of communicating with people, his manner of communication bribed the girl, but not her mother.
I would like to mention this case as a call old people pay attention to them. The old man was resourceful, because not everyone comes into my head the idea to sell umbrella in bad weather. besides, he did not sell his umbrella, and every time someone took away the umbrella of the pub. Yes, he was selling umbrellas and immediately went to the pub to try all the taste of whiskey.
His act, he shows that it is necessary to pay attention to the elderly. despite his age, each can afford pranks.
On the one hand, this story teaches us to be attentive to their mother. But if we look at this story from the other side, we can note that you can not trust the first comer.

Story "The Umbrella Man Roald Dahl by" very interesting. I especially liked the unpredictable ending.
Acquainted with the hero in the beginning of the story, it seemed to me that he's a real gentleman, who needs help. But getting to know him more, I realized that this is not true. I even could not imagine that he was bad.
But why the hero behaves? why did he cheat people? try to understand .........
People often do not consciously do something.
I think so does our hero. It's quite old. I think that people at his age should lead a more relaxed lifestyle.
But he hadn`t enough money for it.
He likes to go to the pub, so deceives people, steals .... For what it all? I think for the fun……
He probably used to drinking expensive drinks. But the money they had not. Finding no other way out, he decides to steal, cheat people.

It's much easier than making honest. I think he's very used to doing this, but no longer able to stop.

He likes the plan. He specially chooses rainy days to steal other people's umbrellas and selling them as his own. For this he pretends helpless .
The Men was very clever , cunning and agile . He very cleverly thought of everything.

This story gives us to understand that people are not quite the ones who actually are.

The narrator in the work "Man with Umbrella" is a twelve year old girl, who came to the capital of England with her mother. They had to refer to the dentist. The girl put the seal, after which they went into a cafe. When it was time to go home, they found that the rain started, and they did not have an umbrella. One elderly man offered them his umbrella instead of paying a taxi.

I like this story about "The Umbrella Man" that I have just read. I consider that it is very interesting and cautionary story about strangers. They can be so nice that you won't know their real thoghts and intentions. And this story teaches us not to believe strangers and avoid them. Moreover, the story tells how bad habbits influence to the person so he lie and trick to get some money for satisfaction of the habbit. Even nice little old man can be a slave of the bad habbit.

Well, what can I say about this story? With all due respect to the author, his novel is not interesting for me. Undoubtedly, there are few intriguing moments and deeper meaning, but generally it is boring. It is a brilliant story for children, like my younger sister, as they will get useful information about strangers. However, for adults this books is useless. There are plenty of genius books, that we should read and we would get more information from them than from this novel.
It is my personal opinion.

To be honest, I do not particularly like this story. Maybe the fact that the narrator is a little 12-year-old girl makes this story too simple. I was expecting a more interesting end with a deeper meaning. As it turned out, the old man was just a fraud. What have I learned from this story? Appearance can be deceptive. You can't trust anyone. And also the story has an idea that bad habits make a man their slave.

In my opinion it's useful and frustrating story at the same time. The meaning of story is useful because it teaches us to be careful with strangers, don't trust everybody. However it is frustrating because this story is about dishonest men and it's an occasion to think that everybody can cheat us. But what about story, it is interesting and unpredictable narrative.

In my opinion, this story illustrates not only the situation in London but also in Moscow. This is a normal situation. There are many such people who come and ask for money to help the animals in return for any pencils or rubber bracelet. They are all crooks. I don't know if she right, when she followed him, but what she saw was to give her and the child to understand that appearances are deceiving. It's a good life lesson for them. Before you do something, you need to think. And they have to give people so much money, even to friends, how many will be able to forgive. It's not his fault that he cheated, it's their fault that they allowed themselves to be deceived. But in return they received the umbrella that they needed to shelter from the rain, I think it was a very good deal. This story is good for people who know nothing about that. When I started to read I almost known he will go to buy some alcohol.

But in return they received the umbrella that they needed to shelter from the rain, I think it was a very good deal.I think it is a good story for people (children) who knows nothing about that. When I started reading about this man I was almost sure he will buy some alcohol on this money.

I like this short and instructive story. However, I thought the little man would be a good person. I guess, that this story teachs us, that neat appearance of the person is't a guarantee of his honesty. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people like this man, and his actions are relatively harmless. We have to be careful in dealing with strangers. I like instructive storys, because you can get useful social infirmation. I belive, that children in schools should read storys like this.

Until the end of story I hoped for honesty and decency of the old man, his action literally broke my heart. When I was reading the story I released myself in girl's place and believed every word the man said absolutely careless, although it is not one of the kind story. Now there is an opinion that people in the modern world became crueler towards each other, nobody will not help other even if he or she really needs support. It makes me wonder whether humans create this treatment to themselves. So, they deserve listlessness.

I was fascinated with this story. It shows the hole truth about nowadays society. There're lots of people in the streets of NY, MC, LC who needs money, home and food. But many people just use such people to earn money with their help. I can often see healthy people at the age of 40 who doesn't work. The y just ask people money "for food". I've been raised in a wealthy family. Since my young years I was told that there's nothing more important then humans lives. My brother told me: " If you see a poor man just give him as much money as you can afford, let him be happy". So, I think that people should help homeless or poor people by giving them money. If you help them but they used money in other way they promised ( just like an umbrella man) that will be on their conscience. You've done everything you could to help them.

What about me, i think, that it is a very strange and life story. There are a lot of interesting people in it. Of course, at first I thought that this old man is very kind and really needs help, but then I was amazed. This is a very cunning person! I do not understand how he has enough advice on this. So I want to say that you do not need to trust strangers.

Honestly, I did not like this story. After reading «The Umbrella Man» by Roald Dahl I had mixed feeling about this story. On the one hand it was interesting and exciting to read it, there was intriguing and instructive thoughts in this work. But on the other hand, I did not like the end of the story. Personally, I, as a reader, stayed on that street with a lot of questions in my head and looked at the little man who simply and with impunity left. Perhaps, the author wanted the readers to think and make their conclusions, but I would like more specific thoughts and actions from the main characters.

Usually I do not like texts in which people are deceived. This story is no exception. Starting to read the text, it really seemed to me that the old man is what he shows himself. The closer the story came to an end, the more I began to doubt the man. I think that this story teaches us not to trust people who look good.

This text was very unexpected for me. I'm really disappointed in old man. His actions were totally unexpected and unpredictable. Initially, I thought that it would be a good cautionary tale with a good ending, but no. The text of course was instructive, but the end of it not good. There is nothing worse than the frustration that the main characters, they were led to decent men, but appearance does not determine trust. I feel sorry for the old fraud, his life is very wrong and sad. To be honest, I didn't like the text, but it is realistic and to some extent actual. I think each of us can be in such a situation, we are not insured by against fraud. This text was very unexpected for me. I'm really disappointed in old man.
